NAVIGON stops PND business in North America

NAVIGON stops PND business in North America
After a few days of rumors about NAVIGON withdrawal from the North American market, NAVIGON’s CEO Egon Minar spoke this morning to GPS Business News: “Due to the difficult economic environment and the aggressive pricing we have decided to withdraw from the PND business in North America for the time being. We are however not closing down our Chicago office which will continue to serve our automotive and mobile phone businesses in North America.”

Egon Minar did not detail how many people are affected by this downsize, but it is a “significant number of people in our Chicago office”, he said. Only a few people will remain to take care of the existing PND customers: “we will continue to fulfill all obligations to our existing PND customers in terms of map update, etc.”, he added.

NAVIGON launched its first products on the North American market in September 2007. During the first quarter of 2008 the German company reached the fourth position on the US market with a share of 7.7%. To reach this share so quickly NAVIGON invested in advertising and was the first to introduce a lifetime traffic service bundled into the price of its product. The German company also had a local product team to localize its software to North American tastes.

It seems the NAVIGON presence on the U.S. market was sustainable as far as the A brands maintained a certain level of premium price. But with products such as the TomTom ONE selling at $99 during the last Christmas season and beyond, there was not much opportunity left to NAVIGON despite the good quality of their products.

Egon Minar, CEO at NAVIGON
Egon Minar, CEO at NAVIGON
Despite this downsize NAVIGON expects to increase its business in its mobile division in North America. Most recently the German company signed a deal with T-Mobile (in Germany) to equip many Smartphones with its onboard navigation software (read here; Egon Minar is now looking at extending this deal in North America. However, this might be a real challenge since European players (Wayfinder, Telmap) have had so far little success on the market. The Apple App store could be an opportunity, but here again price competition is likely to be fierce.

Important market concentration
A few weeks only after Mio decided a significant downsizing of its workforce in the US, this is another mid size PND manufacturer to be hit by the aggressive pricing policies currently taking place on the North American market. What is good news for market leaders Garmin and TomTom is certainly bad news for the rest of the value chain. This is the case for retailers which have now little options left when it comes to lining up PNDs on their shelves.

Although I am glad that Navigon has released an update, I have driven 3000 miles with more incorrect locations than before.

FOR ALL 2100s OWNERS.
The map update is TOO BIG to fit on the existing SD card that came with the unit.
I cannot upgrade a family members unit who has no clue about PC's remotely.
AGAIN, no warning, Iam ticked.
I have compared released County Maps 2 years ago and a lot of developments are not even showing despite being over 4 years released.
Traffic updates worked somewhat in Minneapolis however, going through Nebraska etc to SoCal, I got so screwed with the navigation, i was forced to get maps.....now tell me why maps are showing rest areas and i couldn't find a truck stop for 100's of miles, i got so lost, i have no words.
Thank god i have Iguidance and Copilot, they saved my butt, 2000 miles of car travel and relying on navigon, NO WAY

Sorry, but this was a rushed Map.
Furthermore, we have locally Traffic FM and it does NOT work in palm springs area, despite the CHP giving even on TV updates and a Tower is directly hooked into Broadcast.

I would have loved to get a chance to even try it on a PDA but no go, EXCUSE ME but I PHONE only ?
you gotta be kidding.

I REALLY want t be able to say something good about Navigon, I am German but it breaks my heart for them to not even get BETA testers for each state, so they can get it right.

I own a Navigon 2100 which I've only used 12 times and now it's now functioning. When I power it on it doesn't go past the first screen and I get an application error message that reads "Application error MN6.exe. Unit will shut down, please contact vendor."
I tried the software upgrade on mynavigon and my unit didn't need updated. I tried charging it for 7 hours, pushing the reset button, checked the sd card for errors, nothing is helping...still get the fatal error message MN6. Has anyone else had this issue? I've tried emailing Navigon tech support at least 6 times within the past 2 weeks...I've never gotten a response. I've called both the 800 number as well as the number in Chicago and get a canned recording refering me to the website for tech support again. If there is a lawsuit againist Navigon how does one get on board?

I love my 7100, I think it's the best and nicest navigation unit I've seen so far. Didn't have any issue with it in 3 years and I was looking forward to update to 7300. Too bad they pulled off from US. My only discontent is with Fresh maps that I bought and only got 2 updates so far. Also, they should have informed the registered users they are pulling off. Not nice!

This is for LouisIV and his loose window arm. I have a 7100 (sad to say) and had the same loose arm issue. If you remove the flexible cover (NAVIGON0 there is a 'torx" screw that can be tightened to fix the looseness. I've used my unit all over the US and have been well pleased with the 7100 as my first GPS. Wish I could get an updated map! Guess I'll be forced to by a Garmin.

Of all folks I'm HAPPY with Navigon 5100 MAX. I have had it for a while now and just downloaded Q3-2009 maps to a 4gbSD card(cant use the 2gb providedas map set is to large) It's the ONLY PND that gives me decent directions and I ran it next to a Magellan 4700, Tom Tom 630 GO and a Garmin Nuvi. All of the later gave me plenty of wild goose chases where the NAVIGON did not. I do admit that a older Nextar unit matched the NAVIGON in mapping but failed on giving me accurate poi info. So I am the one thats overjoyed to use NAVIGON 5100 MAX.
Yes, I did have my entire front seat filled with borrowed PND's since I rarely believe reviews

This is ridiculous. I get emails but my replies don't show up. I come to the website and it doesn't know me. This is no way to run a railroad. I'm reposting my 11/25/09 response which might relieve some frustration for others.

I am pleased to announce that I finally received a response from Navigon Support and after following their instructions, I received an RMA and was able to send my unit in for repair. Yesterday, my unit was returned and restored to working order in less than ten days at no cost to me. Incredibly they even replaced the outer glass that had been scratched in the lower right hand corner ... not a problem to me but I am proud it looks brand new and they even retained my address book. I hope the following info assists you and the other half dozen people who wrote me from GPSBUSINESSNEWS.

History: Two requests ignored in late October.
My 10/30/09 email did get a response dated 11/09/09.
Submitted requested info that day.
RMA issued 11/10/09.
Unit shipped 11/13/09
Unit received back from Navigon 11/25/09

I just bought the Navigon 5100 Max from Radio Shack on May 19, 2009 and had only one update of FreshMaps and NOW the company stops business in the USA. What a disappointment! Where can I join the class action suite against Navigon?

Same here. I can't tell you how disappointed I am as a contrast to my original excitement that I scored a 2 yr map update for my recently purchased 8100t and each month I keep checking still not even 3rd QTR Maps! This is no fair at all... this device is going to become useless as time passes.

I originally purchased a Navigon 5100 in 2008 with a three year FreshMaps subscription. I updated that unit once. In July of this year, I had a repair issue with the unit, I contacted Navigon Customer Support with the problem and was told diagnostics would be $55.00 plus what it would cost to repair. I purchased a Navigon 5100MAX. I traded emails with Navigon Customer Support on rolling my FreshMaps subscription to the 5100MAX unit. They eventually did and informed me I would receive an email when my next update would be available. Like everyone else, I'm still waiting. I would also like to be informed if there is a class action suite against Navigon. It cost me $89.00 for a three year subscription of Navigon FreshMaps.

58.Posted by Richard on 2009-11-25 18:15
Has a class action been started? I purchased a two year, quarterly, map update card online. I got one update, 2nd quarter 2009. Every time I connect to Freshmaps, it tells me I'm up to date. No, this is almost the end of the 4th quarter of 2009, where is the 3rd quarter 2009? Emails to the company have gotten no response. If a class action has been started, please let those of us that Navigon has screwed, know how to join it.

I've been writing these guys for weeks after my screen went garbled for no reason. I've owned a 2200T for less then a month and I can't so much as get a canned response from their customer service. These people are crooks and I'm amazed they think they can one day re-enter the US market with the fraud they're committomg. I'd love it if Egon Minar and the bulk Navigon's officers land in jail. I for one spit on Navigon and will never buy one of their products again.

Complain to the FTC, www, ftc.gov. I did, as Navigon has not responded to my warranty inquiry on its website.

53.Posted by Tony on 2009-11-09 07:39
Sad state of affairs. My 7200T was purchased from Amazon in Dec 2008. It worked fine until recently when the "touch" screen no longer would respond. I did a software and map update but that did no good. I called the techspt 800# in the user manual which told me to use the website. I sent filled in the techspt email on the website and was told I'd get an answer within two days. Nada.

I would appreciate learning of any class action suit that is in progress.

One thing I forgot to mention in my last post...my Navigon 7100 had TONS of POI's even some that I wouldn't expect to be there were on there, but I guess that's all moot now since I'll never be able to get a new map or updates even though I bought the thing in December of 2007 and told all my friends and family to get one. For them to just pull out and not even inform ANYONE what was going on is just weird.

51.Posted by LouisIV on 2009-11-06 01:35
I bought a 7100 for myself back when Navigon first started in America in December 2007 after hearing about Navigon on the local Chicago news in November as a good Christmas gift. I have been very pleased with my purchase and loved the Navigon brand. The window arm support became loose last year and won't keep the unit upright anymore so I constantly have to readjust the unit. I have been trying to look for a new one on Amazon and had it in my wish list so that I could buy it when I had enough money to spend $19.00 on it. For the last several months I've been going back and couldn't find it and all the things that Navigon made that I had in my wish list now say "currently unavailable" and I wondered what was going on. The website didn't seem to be in order and I wondered what was happening there. Today I finally looked on google for any news on this subject and I find THIS article from April saying that they just pulled out of North America. WTF? No wonder I can't find anything...thanks for letting me know you're leaving, Navigon; through that newsletter that you could have so easily notified me and everyone who's pissed off on here that you're basically just taking a piss on!! Seriously? Who does this?

My 7100 still works fortunately and I'll use it until it quits on me, but this is really a weird situation going on here. I live here in Chicago and one of the reasons I bought the Navigon is because the U.S. headquarters are (were) here and I thought that was cool so I decided to support a local business even though Garmin would have been my other choice had I never heard of Navigon.

Anyway...I don't know that I can download any new maps (if they continue to make them) because I didn't subscribe to the Freshmaps before they tanked on us and I suppose that means I couldn't join a class-action lawsuit if one ever got formed, but what I can do, and what everyone else on here can do, is contact one of the local Chicago news channels and tell them what's going on and they will do all the hard work for us and put out a news story about this. If that happens then Navigon will have to do something because more people (even non-customers) would know of the situation and the company, to save face, would have to do something if they ever wanted anyone's business ever again in the U.S.

So contact your local news about this matter and see if they can help or run a story about it and also contact all the Chicago news stations to see if they can do anything about it since Chicago was the U.S. headquarters for Navigon.

I bought my unit 7100 on early 2008 for $400+. I bought this unit because of the promised regular freshmaps and now there is no updates!? WTF!

49.Posted by joseph wargo on 2009-10-28 04:28
I also have a 7200t. I DO have a 2 year freshmaps agreement that I bought through amazon.com when I bought the gps. I received the card with the activation code and did one update for 2nd qtr 2009. This MASSIVELY slowed down boot up times and created some other problems too. I don't think I can put in a larger micro sd card as I believe 2 gb is all it will support. No one to get help from as I got the standard letter about more profitable endeavours also.
It is now the 4th qtr of 2009, and when I plug in my 7200t and run Navigon Fresh, it still does not show the 3rd qtr maps being available. This is totally illegal ( at least it should be) as I paid for the map updates, but they are not fulfilling their end of the deal. I hope they do get sued too.

48.Posted by Navigon 2120 Max vs TomTom 730 on 2009-10-27 00:17
I bought a Navigon 2120 max because it was great value. I was not aware at the time they had ceased NA operations. I balked at my TomTom's 730 expensive map upgrade charges. When we compared both units side-by-side on a trip, I would say the Navigon's voice was clearer, and its maps had better graphics. The Navigon could be faulted for its often quirky routing (advised going north when our destination was south). We found the TomTom 730 was more accurate and reliable in that capability. It also found its satellite faster. The TomTom was considerably more easily modified to suit one's preferences (e.g. points of interest). With better programming the Navigon would have been a superior unit.

I was originally told in an e=mail end of September, I AGAIN contacted them and mentioned what damage is being done with their way of handling this .
I received a serious message back being slapped.
His words.. and i did NOT threaten them :

QUOTE:

Thank you for your inquiry.

We are well aware of our situation, so there is no need to threaten us with the internet. Also we can not yet say when the new update will be available. If it is made available you will get an email saying that it is ready for download.

END QUOTE

So , again Navigon is not holding time frames, We are waiting on Q-3, there will be no !-4 since that would not make sense either, but would save hem money for not paying the MAP Companies.
II am just speechless and saddened, that WE ALL are taken for a rife , and who here would buy Navigon again ?
My faith is destroyed.

Wow, what a shame, I really like my 2100 I bought Oct 08. I just finished a road trip to Virginia, and it did a pretty good job for not being updated since I first logged on/created an account and received the first free map update last year. The POI option was not the greatest, but I just figured I needed to do an update. I was thinking of paying for the 3 yr map udpate option, but then I heard Navigon was leaving North America. Guess I will be getting another unit now. I need a unit that can be updated with current maps.

I have a registered Navigon 5100 and purchased a three year FreshMaps subscription at the end of last year. So far, I have only been able to get map updates up to Q2 2009. If it is indeed true that Navigon will not be providing further map updates, I would be very interested in learning more about any class action suit(s) that may be brought against them.

I am relieved but saddened that I am not the only one feeling the frustration with NAVIGON. I too purchased a GPS device from them (when I was in Europe) but when I tried to activate my US map I was prompted to enter an activation code which I had misplaced. Per NAVIGON's website, I contacted their support center to request the activation code but when I explained my problem via email, I got the same response again and again.
"Dear NAVIGON Customer, Thank you for your inquiry. Accessories, map material and content are not available in North America through NAVIGON. Unfortunately we don't have information concerning the availability of these products at other major retail shops".
After going back and forth a few times, It was clear that NAVIGON was not interested in what I had to say as I kept getting the same canned statment. Needless to say, I was floored by NAVIGON's lack of support and unwillingness to assist, considering how much I paid for their product. If there is a any possibility of legal action taken against them please let me know bacause I want in.

I just purchased a 7200T, Great unit but noticed the Altitude was almost always showing me below sea level. I drove out to the Beach (Ocean) and stood at sea level, unit told me I was 60 feet blow sea level! Anyway, Last week I got a RMA number, sent it back to repair. The unit came back with a form saying nothing was found wrong. When I turned it on for the first time I saw all the tech did was restore factory defaults. NAVIGON customer service is pitiful and clearly their techs dont have an ounce of knowledge about diagnosing a unit. They have a far superior product but shame on them.

Question. If your 7200T is working other than the altitude, could it be that it has a software issue and NOT hardware? If it's hardware, I can understand if the repairs weren't performed. If it's software wouldn't it be the same as any other micro/computer system that would be possibly fixed with a future SOFTWARE update? How can a repair tech be held accountable for a software issue when it happens with more than just your device?

I think some people should get their facts straight before speaking.

A. All devices under warranty are covered for repair or replacement.

B. Updates via Fresh are available as long as subscription is valid.

If you update your device, then usually most of any issue is fixed, anything else you might want to email support staff to setup a repair. I sent in my 2200T and got it back within 2 weeks. Works perfecty. They even updated it FOR me.

Can't help it if you are too stubborn or ignorant to own a technological device....

Actually the $100 update wasn't too bad, considering they wanted $89 for me to subscribe to Freshmaps back before everything fell apart in July. Unfortunately I procrastinated and didn't subscribe, now I can't get a valid code to activate it. I too bought a software update from Ebay for $19.99 which brought me up to date as of 2nd quarter 2009. I bought my 7100 unit in Jan of 08 so was happy to update to 2009. Roads don't change that awful much so hopefully it will be good for awhile. I too love the unit and it makes you sick when you go on their website and see all the new innovative systems they have, but they are only available in Europe. Ugh!! Wish we could talk to someone but you can't even get a person on the phone. It's all automated and they want you to email. Guess that's what we should do. Not that it will make a difference except make us feel better.

Thanks for the tip. I used www.navigon.com/freshmaps (it's on the map voucher card) The link brought me to their European site. The Navigon Fresh software also is linked to their European site. How do you avoid this site and get on the US site?

33.Posted by Maggie on 2009-09-10 07:42 (from a mobile)
Mcato
make sure you are on the us site. The European site will reject your password. The code won't work on that site either. I bought a code on eBay for $100.00. Activated it last night. I'm hoping it won't be the last update. If so it is a very expensive upgrade. Too bad. I really like the unit.

I recently purchased a Navigon 2120 Max. I registered the product and activated the unit okay. When I tried to activate the FreshMaps voucher, the site said the code was invalid. I then tried to login to my account. The site said my password, which worked yesterday, was invalid. I then requested a new password sent to my email account (2x). Nothing was sent. When I tried to register the product (again), the US and Canada were not listed in their countries. is this website being monitored? Do I forget about the 3 years of map updates? Any assistance will be appreciated.
Thanks.

I purchased a 2nd quarter 2009 Navigon Map Update on a CD from Ebay for $19.99. I downloaded and it's working fine. Not sure if this is something that we will be able to continue to purchase but at least I'm updated for now. Haven't heard a word from the Navigon company about whether or not they will continue to offer updates. All they want to push now is their mobile navigators, whatever they are. Anyway, try Ebay if you wants an update. Maybe they are still available.

I was told; new Maps are coming end of September.
I prey they do.
I need the Last Software update, to reinstall, since it takes FOREVER to get my Favorites loaded.
Otherwise, I 100% agree, my two GPS Navigon Devices have been the MOST ACCURATE out of ALL I ever owned.
Navigon switched to PDA and Phone software only, right now there is a PRICE WAR going on and I am about to switch to ALK due to the maybe this maybe not, there is no single straight answer, that should be accompanied with a sincere APOLOGY from Navigon.
I do understand the Decision but it breaks my heart. However, without an official statement, who knows if the switch to software is even honored?

I have been reading these comments, however I can only assume that there is no way to buy or download new maps on the 7200T if bought after May 2009. I bought and registered mine in July 2009 and have downloaded new version of the operating system and it worked. However, I have no available option to load maps from the other tab when I logon. Is there any hope or am I stuck in buying a TomTom or Shack product?

Disappointed they are leaving the U.S. market. They were the best GPS I have tried -- I even prefer it to the one in my Lexus. I hope they will continue to make map updates available.

I have a Navigon 2100 to which I've managed to lose the password---(it has been months since we've last planned a trip and in the interim I forgot how to get into it). So, it's a useless, cheesy piece of s@%t right now, not much more than a doorstop. I tried calling the phone number that comes up when I touch the screen for information and find the phone goes to a voice-mail which tells me I have to contact them by email. On their "support" page, there's the owners manual with instructions how to cancel the password feature, but I can't even get to that before the damn password screen appears and I can go no further. That's unacceptable. For a unit that once cost nearly $300.00US, and to abandon their customers as they have deserves a day in court for them to refund every penny spent on their products. They mention that they need to focus on "more profitable segments------". HUH???? Didn't they MAKE PROFITS on those of us on their way up the ladder of success? Now, they decide to "RE-focus" on something more lucrative for them. Greedy bastards, that they just turn their backs on those who helped them become PROFIT-able. Either get competitive, or get out----but you do owe us some compensation for your poor business acumen.

I am terriby disappointed that Navigon has to leave the US market. However, I am upset that they didn't send courtesy emails to its US market account holders.

I have had some issues with the map updates and Lifetime traffic, however my 2 emails have remained unanswered. I purchased from Amazon.Com a 2009 map update for my 7200T GPS, however I inadvertently installed it on a 7100 series which I don't even own nor have. I want Navigon to undo the activation of the Q2009 map update on the 7100 which I don't even have, and to allow me to reactivate it on my 7200T series. I don't want to buy the 2009 updates Navigon sells online because of the lack of US customer service should there be any problems. If anybody has any idea how to undo this erroneous map activation on a unit I don't even have and then transfer this code to my actual GPS, pls contact me.
